The difference between precision casting and die casting

Precision casting and die casting are common metal casting processes widely used in industrial manufacturing. Although both use molds to shape metals, there are some differences in the specific process flow, principles, and scope of application. Below, the editor of precision casting parts manufacturers will provide a detailed introduction to the differences between precision casting and die casting.

1. Process flow:

Precision casting: Precision casting, also known as investment casting, involves producing a mold with the desired product shape, heating the metal material to a molten state, and then injecting the molten metal into the mold to form the desired product through cooling and solidification.

Die casting: Die casting refers to heating solid or liquid metal materials to a molten state, then injecting the molten metal into the mold through pressure, cooling and solidifying to form the desired product.

2. Scope of application:

Precision casting: Precision casting is commonly used to produce castings with complex shapes, high precision requirements, special material requirements, or larger wall thickness. Castings produced by precision casting have good surface quality, internal structure density, and mechanical properties.

Die casting: Die casting is mainly suitable for producing large quantities of castings with simple shapes, light weight, and smaller dimensions. Die casting can efficiently produce complex geometric structures and quickly fill molds, producing highly accurate castings.

3. Principle:

Precision casting: The principle of precision casting is that during the casting process, the material of the mold and the material of the product have a certain degree of compatibility, and then the casting is directly formed in the mold. Among them, mold materials are divided into two types: melt type and non melt type. Melt type molds are made of high melting point alloys, while non melt type molds are made of materials that do not react with casting materials.

Die casting: The principle of die casting is to form a pressure field and hydraulic siphoning effect in the metal melt through the pressure of the mold, allowing the melt to fill the mold cavity and cool and solidify under a certain pressure. Die casting generally uses high-pressure nozzles to inject molten metal into the mold, and then the closure of the mold plays a role in filling the mold cavity, cooling and solidification.

4. Equipment requirements:

Precision casting: The equipment requirements for precision casting are relatively low, mainly requiring basic casting equipment such as electric furnaces, melting furnaces, and investment molds. In addition, due to the high requirements of precision casting for molds, the production and maintenance of molds are also important.

Die casting: Die casting requires the equipment of a die casting machine or die casting equipment, which usually consists of hydraulic and locking systems, heating systems, pouring systems, etc. Because die-casting requires high precision and durability of molds, mold design and manufacturing require more precision and wear resistance.

In summary, although both precision casting and die casting belong to metal casting processes, there are some differences in process flow, scope of application, principles, and equipment requirements. For castings that require high precision and complex shapes, precision casting is a more suitable choice; For castings that require mass production and have simpler shapes, die casting is more suitable. These two casting processes have their own advantages in industrial manufacturing, and selecting the appropriate process according to specific needs can achieve better production results.
