What are the difficulties in processing stainless steel castings?

times

The processing of stainless steel castings is a complex and technically demanding process, which presents many challenges due to factors such as material properties, casting techniques, and processing difficulties. The following provides a detailed analysis of the difficulties in processing stainless steel castings, including material characteristics, casting processes, processing techniques, and surface treatment.

1. Processing difficulties caused by material characteristics

Stainless steel is a type of steel containing alloying elements such as chromium and nickel, which has good corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and high temperature performance. However, these characteristics also make stainless steel exhibit high hardness, toughness, and work hardening tendency during processing, posing challenges to machining.

(1) Work hardening

Stainless steel is prone to work hardening during the cutting process, especially under high temperature and high pressure conditions, where the surface hardness of the material significantly increases, leading to increased tool wear and reduced machining efficiency. Work hardening may also cause cracks or deformation on the surface of the workpiece, affecting the accuracy and surface quality of the casting.

(2) Poor thermal conductivity

Stainless steel has poor thermal conductivity, and the heat generated during cutting is difficult to dissipate quickly, which can easily accumulate between the tool and the workpiece, leading to an increase in tool temperature and accelerating tool wear. Meanwhile, high temperatures may also cause deformation of the workpiece, affecting machining accuracy.

(3) High resilience

Stainless steel has high toughness and is prone to producing long and continuous chips during cutting, which can easily wrap around the tool or workpiece, affecting the stability and safety of the machining process. In addition, high toughness will increase cutting force, leading to increased tool wear.

2. Difficulties in Casting Process

The casting process of stainless steel castings is complex, involving multiple stages such as melting, pouring, and cooling, each of which may affect the quality of the castings.

(1) Melting and pouring

The melting temperature of stainless steel is relatively high, and alloy elements are prone to oxidation. Therefore, strict control of temperature and atmosphere is required during the melting process to prevent oxidation and the formation of inclusions. In addition, stainless steel has poor fluidity and is prone to defects such as cold insulation and porosity during pouring.

(2) Cooling and shrinkage

Stainless steel has a high coefficient of linear expansion, which can easily generate significant shrinkage stress during the cooling process, leading to deformation or cracking of the casting. Therefore, it is necessary to design the pouring system and cooling process reasonably during the casting process to reduce the generation of stress.

(3) Surface quality

The surface of stainless steel castings is prone to defects such as oxide scale and sand holes, which affect the appearance and performance of the castings. In order to improve surface quality, it is necessary to strictly control the quality of the sand mold, pouring temperature, and cooling rate during the casting process.

3. Difficulties in processing technology

The processing technology of stainless steel castings includes cutting, milling, drilling, grinding, etc., all of which face certain challenges when processing stainless steel.

(1) Tool selection

Due to the high hardness and toughness of stainless steel, suitable tool materials and geometric shapes need to be selected during processing. Hard alloy, ceramic or coated cutting tools are usually used to improve their wear resistance and cutting performance. In addition, the geometric parameters of the cutting tool (such as rake angle, rake angle, rake angle, etc.) also need to be optimized to reduce cutting force and improve machining efficiency.

(2) Cutting parameters

The cutting parameters of stainless steel, such as cutting speed, feed rate, and cutting depth, need to be selected reasonably. Excessive cutting speed can lead to an increase in tool temperature and accelerate wear; Low cutting speed will reduce machining efficiency. The selection of feed rate and cutting depth also needs to consider the effects of work hardening and cutting force.

(3) Cooling and lubrication

Due to the poor thermal conductivity of stainless steel, sufficient coolant is required during the machining process to reduce the temperature of the tool and workpiece, minimize tool wear and workpiece deformation. In addition, coolant can also act as a lubricant, reducing cutting forces and chip adhesion.

4. Difficulties in surface treatment

The surface treatment of stainless steel castings includes polishing, acid washing, passivation, etc. These processes not only improve the surface quality of castings, but also face some difficulties.

(1) Polishing

The surface of stainless steel castings usually requires polishing treatment to improve their smoothness and corrosion resistance. However, the hardness and toughness of stainless steel make the polishing process difficult and prone to scratches or uneven surfaces. Therefore, it is necessary to choose appropriate polishing tools and process parameters during polishing, and strictly control the polishing pressure and time.

(2) Acid washing

Acid washing is a common method for removing oxide scale and rust on the surface of stainless steel castings. However, during the pickling process, it is easy to encounter problems such as excessive corrosion or uneven surface, which can affect the appearance and performance of the castings. Therefore, during acid washing, it is necessary to strictly control the concentration, temperature, and soaking time of the acid solution.

(3) Passivation

Passivation treatment can improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel castings, but it is prone to uneven passivation film or local over passivation during the passivation process. Therefore, it is necessary to choose passivation solution and process parameters reasonably during passivation, and strictly control the processing time and temperature.

5. Other difficulties

In addition to the technical difficulties mentioned above, the processing of stainless steel castings also faces some other issues, such as cost control and environmental requirements.

(1) Cost control

Stainless steel materials are expensive and difficult to process, resulting in higher production costs for stainless steel castings. Therefore, it is necessary to choose processes and equipment reasonably during the processing to improve production efficiency and reduce production costs.

(2) Environmental requirements

During the stainless steel processing, a large amount of chips, coolant, and exhaust gas are generated, which have a certain impact on the environment. Therefore, effective environmental protection measures need to be taken during the processing, such as recycling chips, treating coolant, and purifying exhaust gas, to reduce environmental pollution.

The difficulties in processing stainless steel castings mainly focus on material properties, casting processes, processing techniques, and surface treatment. The material properties such as work hardening, poor thermal conductivity, and high toughness increase the difficulty of processing; The melting, pouring, cooling and other processes in the casting process need to be strictly controlled; The selection of cutting tools, cutting parameters, cooling and lubrication in processing technology need to be optimized; The polishing, acid washing, passivation and other processes in surface treatment also require precise control. In addition, cost control and environmental requirements are also important factors to consider in the processing of stainless steel castings. By selecting processes and equipment reasonably and optimizing processing parameters, these difficulties can be effectively overcome, and the processing quality and efficiency of stainless steel castings can be improved.
